10-digit dialing procedure for Louisiana's 504 and 337 area codes effective Oct. 24, 2021

federal 10-digit dialing requirement begins October 24

FCC assigns 988 as new, 3-digit Suicide Prevention Hotline number

[October 11, 2021] — Due to a requirement released by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), 82 area codes across 18 states, including Louisiana’s 337 and 504 area codes, will now require 10-digit (area code + telephone number) dialing for all outbound local calls when dialing from any phone device (mobile, landline and internet). This transition to the new dialing procedure will be implemented on October 24, 2021. Users may now begin 10-digit (area code) dialing for the areas listed in the link above. Calls will not be completed if you do not dial the appropriate area code for local outbound calls after this date. Employees may continue to use 5-digit dialing to reach Tulane extensions.

The new dialing procedure was adopted as a result of the FCC identifying 988 as the new, nationwide, three-digit Suicide Prevention Hotline to quickly connect Americans in a crisis with suicide prevention and mental health crisis counselors. All 988 calls will route to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK) effective July 16, 2022.
